(See 23 Dec update at bottom of post re appointment of chief execs.
And see 5 Jan, 2011 update re a Halton appointment)
On Friday, the NSW Health Minister Carmel Tebbutt announced the membership of the 15 geographically-based Governing Councils that will oversee NSW’s Local Health Networks or LHNs – full details at the bottom of this post. (There are another three specialty networks for children’s health, forensic mental health, and services delivered by St Vincent’s Health.)
The LHNs will replace the existing area health services from January 1.
Meanwhile, I wonder how long it will be until we have some idea of how they will work in with the Medicare Locals? And how long until we have some idea of what difference they’re making, compared with the old structures? And what will the NSW election mean for their futures? So many questions…
One thing does seem clear right now, however. They will face a lot of scepticism from a restructure-weary workforce.
According to the Minister’s statement, the Governing Council members were appointed by Cabinet following a selection process convened by the Chairs, which included independent advice. Tebbutt also says that the final round of recruitment for LHN Chief Executives (who will report to the Governing Council) will be finalised shortly. The Chief Executive will report to the Governing Council.

Update, 5 Jan, 2011
An observant Croakey reader has sent in a note pointing out that Mr Charles Halton CBE, who has been appointed to the Southern NSW Board is the father of Ms Jane Halton, the head of the Department of Health and Ageing. “Could make for some interesting chit chat over the family breakfast table,” observes our correspondent. Yes – particularly given the longstanding barney between the Pambula and Bega communities about the future of health and hospital services in the area, as well as the divisions between some of the local medicos. Meanwhile, this 2002 profile by Margo Kingston has a bit more on the intersection of father’s and daughter’s career paths.
Only one in West Sydney – the former Chair of SWAHS Advisory Council, A/Prof Peter Zelas OAM, a colorectal surgeon from Blacktown Hospital has kept his spot (but not Chair)
All bases seem to be covered:
Auburn: Bajraktarevic-Hayward from STARTTS and Dr Hadia Mukhtar covers the Lebanese influence as an Auburn GP. Mukhtar is well respected through her involvement in the Medical Association for Prevention of War.
Blacktown: Zelas and Clr Collins who is a Deputy Mayor at Blacktown local Council.
Mt Druitt: Cutmore with extensive experience in ATSI health
Westmead: Pesce & Chapman – two great medico-leaders with extensive political clout
Baker is an interesting choice (former NSW Chief Nurse who spent most of her time over @ RNS) – what brings her out west?
Sydney Uni has put up Jane Spring, a Fellow of the Senate with a sporting and NSW govt admin background – with no health experience.
Di O’Halloran is Chair of NSW GP Council and a Member of the NSW Health Advisory Council
Hmmm, looks like Clr Collins is the only non-medico/nurse without a clear vested interest; speaking for the community.
Teresa Anderson was previously the Deputy Chief Executive at SSWAHS so no surprise that she was successful, Amanda Larkin was the General Manager for Campbelltown/Camden Hospitals, Danny O’Connor used to be the GM for Concord Hospital before moving over to Western Sydney AHS as the Chief Executive.
Northern NSW:
Ms Hazel Bridgett (Chair) was previous Chair, Long history nursing and community advocacy, active Labor
Professor Lesley Barclay AO Head of the University Dept of Rural Health, excellent
Ms Leone Crayden was previously on AHAC, outspoken Mental Health Advocate, smart and dynamic
Dr Austin Curtin , Long History as Surgeon VMO, well respected
Ms Rosemary Kew, was a previous member of the AHAC, Occupational Therapist and only Allied Health Clinician, one to watch
Dr Brian Pezzutti, former Liberal NSW MP, Surgeon, Brigadier in reserves
CE is the same, Chris Crawford, husband to Catherine Cusack Liberal Pollie NSW, and probable aspiring Director General, watch this space
