ABC has come under fire for closing its @ABCEmergency Twitter account, as part of a decision to shut all but four of its official accounts.
Twitter users have sounded the alarm, highlighting the importance of the account during bushfires, flooding and other emergencies – see some of the commentary below describing the move as dangerous, short-sighted and “a big, big mistake”.
It’s worth noting also that journalists and the media often rely on Twitter during emergencies for updates and to hear from communities, highlighting that it is not only Twitter users who will be affected.
This is just the latest in a long line of reminders about the fragility of our news and information systems, and at a time when escalating crises mean the need for reliable, relevant news and information will become ever more important.
At Croakey Health Media, we want to help change the conversation, beyond the toxicity of Twitter (or X, as we should be calling it) and the extractive marketing of Meta.
Join us for an online discussion from 5pm AEST on Monday, 14 August – to collectively envision a #DigitalNationBuilding project that centres the needs of communities before profits, and that contributes to a healthy, safe and enjoyable digital experience.
Let’s move the conversation beyond the toxicity of Twitter and the marketing machine of Meta. This will be an informal discussion, where participants can share knowledge and ideas on these topics.
