Lets remember that it is not just the medical use of antibiotics that is contributing to the problem. Since the fifties livestock have been receiving them to increase production.
There is also the issue of overuse of antibacterials in products like domestic cleaners and so forth. This probably has the added disadvantage of increasing the incidence of allergies, since we need ” good ” germs to keep us healthy and tune our immune sytems.
Additionally some countries don’t regulate the availability of over the counter antibiotics, leading to misuse.
And finally, an increasing number of parents are reluctant to have their children immunised, leading to the return of almost vanished illnesses such as whooping cough, and viral diseases such as Rubella.
The WHO has been concerned about these issues for decades.
