One of the largest impediments to good quality health care (and there are many more) is the mindless (and largely baseless) belief that increased ‘efficiency’ leads to better health care. The requirement for 100% bed occupancy for instance really mandates the need for elective surgery waiting lists, certainly an effective model that guarantees no down time at all for hospital staff but also an outcome that doesn’t result in an improvement in quality of care. Nothing will change whilst health continues to be run as if it was a factory.
