Croakey is taking a break over the Christmas period.
If you are in the fortunate position of having more cash or goods than you need post-Christmas, spare a thought for the Asylum Seekers Centre in NSW or similar organisations working for those in need.
Prabha Gulati, Director of the Asylum Seekers Centre, writes:
The holiday season is upon us, which for most people in Australia is a time for sharing with family and close friends. It’s an awful time of year to be alone and in hardship as are many of our clients. So, for asylum seekers, the emotional and practical support we offer at the Asylum Seekers Centre is even more vital and can mean the difference between a place at the table or a night sleeping rough.
An overwhelming majority of asylum seekers arrive on our shores alone. They arrive highly vulnerable, struggling with trauma, poor physical health, and destitution. It is only with your support that we can help asylum seekers live a dignified, meaningful and safe existence while they await the outcomes of their applications for permanent residency.
A practical way that you can assist is by providing any of the following essential items that make life much easier for asylum seekers:
- Food vouchers
- Toiletries
- NSW Metro 10 bus tickets
- International phone cards
- USB
The support of the broader community is crucial in order for Centre to meet the needs of asylum seekers.
If you would like to support the vital work of the Asylum Seekers Centre please go to our website, or send the items to:

I appeal to you to give generously at this time, to help us continue the vital emergency practical assistance and advocacy work that asylum seekers rely upon. Wishing you and your family and friends a joyous and peaceful festive season.
