Welcome to the first in a series of #CommunityMatters broadcasts by Dr Janine Mohamed, Chair of Croakey Health Media.
The broadcast covers some of the determinants of health inequities that are being exposed during the pandemic.
Says Dr Janine Mohamed: “It is critical that pandemic responses empower and support communities’ strengths and resilience, rather than undermining them.”
Mohamed also pays respects to the late Tanya Day, a proud Yorta Yorta woman, and her family and their community of supporters in the wake of a coroner’s decision to refer her death in custody to the Department of Public Prosecutions.
Also remembered with great respect and fondness is the late Professor Dennis McDermott, whose sudden death has left many bereft and grieving. On Twitter, he described himself as: “Koori poet and academic. Scholar of social determinants of Indigenous health, policy, equity and racism. Writes on people, politics, music and country”.
